This was my first CCW renewal course. The staff was professional, patient and knowledgeable without being overbearing. They were friendly and made the day fun. Which for me, as nervous shooter, made all the difference and I got to enjoy my range day.
The stop the bleed segment was really interesting and I like that it was informative yet succinct.
One comment, not a complaint per se, just an observation: no one ever checked our IDs to make sure we were who we said we were…what’s to stop someone who’s a crappy shooter to send someone else in their stead who’s a better shot, then someone irresponsible ends up with a certificate to get a CCW? Food for thought.
Finally, I get that these guys are passionate about what they do, but there’s only so much you can say before the bias comes out. “Not to get political” *says a bunch of stuff obviously political* like, that’s not what I’m here for (and some of it was incorrect as I literally work for the public defenders office and you’re standing there disparaging it, among other things, but I digress. I kept it to myself simply because discourse would have kept us there longer and I wanted to go home).
Furthermore, the insurance plug. Yes, having a plan in a worst case scenario is important. Always have a contingency plan. But the pressure sales tactic by using fear mongering is annoying at best and misleading at worst. So that part is unfortunate but part of the experience.
Don’t let the negative comments deter you - this really is an outstanding course and frankly the insurance part could be worse, my first CCW course felt like a timeshare pitch and I hated it. This class focused more on actual shooting, and safe and responsible weapons handling. All in all, I would recommend it.
Paloma,
First, thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and detailed review. I genuinely appreciate the balance in your feedback.
I’m glad to hear the team made you feel comfortable and that the environment helped you enjoy your range day, especially as a self described nervous shooter. That matters to us. The Stop the Bleed portion is something we believe strongly in, so I’m glad it felt informative and efficient rather than dragged out.
You brought up two important points.
On ID verification, that is a fair observation. We do verify applicant information through the registration process and qualification documentation, but your comment is valid and we will review how we can make the identity verification step more visible and clearly documented during check in. Integrity in the certification process is non negotiable for us, so I appreciate you raising it.
Regarding the tone around policy discussions and the legal system, our intent is never to disparage anyone or any profession. The goal is to communicate real world risk and legal realities tied to use of force, but that should always be done professionally and without bias. If that line was crossed or even felt crossed, that is on us to recalibrate. I appreciate you handling it with professionalism in the moment and sharing it constructively here.
As for the insurance discussion, I understand your perspective. We do present it because we have seen firsthand how financially devastating a defensive incident can become, even for responsible citizens. That said, it should always feel like information, not pressure. We will continue to refine how that portion is delivered so it remains educational rather than uncomfortable.
Your closing comments mean a lot. Our mission is to focus on safe, responsible firearms handling and meaningful skill development. I’m glad that came through.
Thank you again for the honest feedback and for trusting us with your renewal.
Ron
Great Class, even better group of trainers. Patient and helpful. Above all they interact well with the students and encourage questions. As they reiterated a few times "the only dumb question is the one not asked"
Thank you, we really appreciate this.
That line gets said a lot in our classes for a reason. People come in with different levels of experience and the last thing we ever want is someone staying quiet because they feel unsure. Questions are how you get better and how you stay safe.
I’m glad the team made it feel approachable and interactive. That balance between professionalism and keeping it comfortable is something we work hard on.
Thank you for trusting us with your training and for taking the time to share this. Hope to see you back out on the range again soon.
Ron
Super cool staff. Very helpful
Excellent training and outstanding communication. The instructors were professional, patient, and very responsive to questions throughout the entire process. The course was well organized, safety-focused, and thorough. They followed through on everything they promised and made the CCW process much less stressful. Highly recommend.
Raquel,
This made my morning. Thank you.
We know the CCW process, especially in Los Angeles County, can feel overwhelming. Our goal is always to remove the stress, stay organized, and make sure every student feels confident walking out the door not just with a certificate, but with real understanding and safe handling skills.
I’m proud of the team for delivering on communication and professionalism, and I’m glad that stood out to you. That’s intentional.
Thank you for trusting Medic Up with something this important and for taking the time to recommend us. We appreciate you.
Ron
